What am I going to leave behind for my children?
Polythene bags, plastic bottles, cigarette butts, dry rivers, bare hillsides and pictures of extinct species? It is never ‘we’, it is ‘I’. ‘We’ means everyone but me. So let me do what I can. Now!
This year has been particularly devastating for some of my favourite rivers and it will take many years for the rivers to recover IF we give the river’s a chance. Our ‘mentality’ of grab and run, and propensity to hoarding, allows little scope for conservation. This is not restricted to any particular group/s.
Yet there are people and groups who are involved, in so many ways, in trying to arrest the degeneration. However many are working in isolation. So what prevents us from coming together to make this movement a way of life? Can we keep aside our mutual distrust and ego to come together to make a substantial contribution?
What I am saying is nothing new or any brilliant new thought process recently dawned, this is reality.
Look what we have done to the tiger! While every well meaning person in their own honest way wanted to do something good, tigers got obliterated from at least 3 forests completely. Maybe more, who knows! What are we doing to the Mahaseer? The ‘river tiger’, has to survive dynamiting, indiscriminate netting, thoughtlessly constructed dams destroying breeding areas, apart from growing human habitation polluting rivers, scanty rainfall etc.
So where do we go from here? We need to look at conservation in totality. It cannot be on the flavor of the day basis. I don’t have all the answers but I have a fair number of questions. Also I know so many knowledgeable people who, if they sit down together, will come up with many answers.
So let us take the first step today.
